BC: Victoria Wants the Juno Awards

Author: Jordan Bateman 2012/05/01

Oh brother.

The B.C. government announced yesterday that provincial taxpayers will put up $1.5 million to try and lure the Juno Awards to Victoria in 2014.

You know the Junos—the Canadian Grammys, where Cancon superstars like Nickelback get their just due. The province wants them.

Worse yet, the province is pretty much forcing the hand of the 13 Greater Victoria municipalities to come on board too—making their grant contingent on all 13 supporting the bid and putting in a total of $450,000.http://news.gc.ca/web/article-eng.do?m=/index&nid=524869

Generally, the feds have kicked in money too—to both the awards and the local communities.

There are so many better uses for this money, but politicians love their parties and their rock stars. Sorry taxpayers.

And in case you’re playing Juno Award trivia later, here are the ten winningest artists ever:

1. Anne Murray 24
2. Celine Dion 20
3. Bryan Adams 17
4. Jim Cuddy 13
5. Gordon Lightfoot 13
6. Alanis Morissette 13
7. Orchestre Symphonique de Montreal 12
8. The Tragically Hip 12
9. Nickelback 12
10. Shania Twain 12
